The Golden Anniversary

2024 – Around the World and Close to HomeOnce the stuff of science fiction, Artificial Intelligence becomes mainstream, with AI not only accessible to science and business but individuals’ everyday life. Longtime dominant political parties around the world sustain defeats in India, Japan and South Africa. After surviving an assassination attempt, Donald Trump becomes only the second U.S. president elected for nonconsecutive terms despite being convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records. On the eve of the Democratic Convention President Joe Biden drops his bid for reelection and VP Kamala Harris earns the nomination. Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge is hit by a freighter, causing its collapse and killing six workers. Gregg Berhalter’s second stint as USMNT coach ends after just 11 months when the U.S. fails to reach the Copa America knockout stage while new USWNT coach Emma Hayes guides the Yanks to gold at the Paris Olympics after just four months on the job. In Washington, Jay Inslee chooses not to run for a fourth term as Governor, and Bob Ferguson defeats Dave Reichert with 55 percent. Five of King County’s biggest cities’ minimum hourly wage rises past $20. Award-winning KIRO News Radio anchor Dave Ross retires after 47 years behind the mic. A Metro bus driver is stabbed to death by rider in the U District. Washington falls 34-13 to Michigan in the CFP National Championship Game, and four days later coach Kalen DeBoer (25-3 in two seasons) bolts for Alabama. Vancouver gymnast Jordan Chiles seemingly earns an Olympic gymnastics bronze medal only to lose it on a technicality.

The Golden Anniversary It was Mother’s Day weekend. It was love at first sight.

Jane Wagner tagged along with her mother, who was likely attending her first professional sporting event, the inaugural Seattle Sounders home match. New to town, David Gillett was also there, dressed in a dark green shirt and short aqua shorts. He was playing in that first game, not knowing what kind of welcome awaited.

It was an evening at Memorial Stadium packed with emotion. Jane’s mom leapt to her feet, sending her popcorn skyward when Seattle struck for the first goal in the opening minutes. The Sounders proceeded to win more than 12,000 new friends with that goal, plus a few others, in a 4-0 victory over Denver.

At the final whistle, Gillett stood beside his teammates and beyond just accepting a standing ovation, enthusiastically cheered and clapped back at the fans. Three months later that summer of ‘74, at the Sounders’ final home game, Gillett was among the players wading into the stands to present roses. He gave one of them to Jane’s mom.

That was a moment, a game, a summer, that Jane and Dave never forgot. Early in 2024, they met again. Wagner and Gillett were attending, coincidentally, a club event leading into the Sounders’ 50th anniversary season.

“Hi, do you know who I am?” he asked Jane. “Of course, you’re David Gillett,” she replied reflexively.

A Flood of Memories Instantly, time and space were shrunk. The memories came flooding back. Memories of Jane’s mom and the Sounders Boosters Club and meeting all the players. The Wagners’ lives have been closely intertwined with the game and the Sounders ever since.

Later in the Seventies Jane came to meet her husband, a player, youth coach and referee, at a Sounders game in the Kingdome. Their children, now grown, regularly accompany her for matches at Lumen Field. Jane’s home features a hallway of framed Sounders memorabilia, including a letter written to original head coach John Best, thanking him for helping create such a special summer.

Throughout 2024, when old film clips would be featured on the stadium’s giant video screens, her eyes would well-up with gentle tears.

Newer fans who didn’t experience such up close interactions and players who arrived later on may not fully grasp all that was celebrated during the 2024 anniversary campaign. Still, there would be memories stirred from the nearly 1,600 games played by more than 600 players and witnessed at home by more than 15 million fans whose support is legend.

The North Star Since Seattle’s first foray into professional soccer there have been multiple iterations and league affiliations, devastating downturns and euphoric delights, all leading to the first true milestone achievements: sustaining and, indeed, growing the game for five decades.

And it was that first Sounders squad who became the North Star, setting the course for what was to come. Their friendliness and spirited, entertaining play would take center stage and win legions of friends. Several of those ’74 alumni returned for a magical reunion and en masse induction into the newly created Eternal Sounders Circle of Legends.

In the days preceding the designated 50th anniversary match on June 15, the club invited back all alumni players, coaches and staff for multiple events. There, Gillett would be reunited with teammates – The Lads as they were widely known – from those early days, when most players were on short-term loans from European clubs. Among them was Seattle’s original number 10, Hank Liotart.

Unlike Gillett, who has lived, married and raised a family in the Puget Sound area, Liotart had not been back to Seattle since his playing days. Born in the Netherlands, he has made west Texas his home and only followed the Sounders from afar. At 80, he excitedly accepted the club’s offer to bring him back.

During a training session at the new Longacres headquarters, Liotart soon was reliving old times with ’74 teammates Gillett, David Butler, Otey Cannon, Dave D’Errico, Ballan Campeau and Roger Goldingay. On gameday, he would rejoin his friendship with Pepe Fernandez, his teammate both in Holland and Seattle.

“We had one helluva time together,” said Liotart. “Friendships like that never die.”

“I loved coming to Seattle,” Liotart added. “Seattle people treated us like rock stars. It was unbelievable, the support we got. People didn’t know anything about the game, but they liked it.”

Bittersweet Reunion Gillett had remained with the original NASL Sounders through 1979. After they folded, he was involved with FC Seattle and was general manager of the championship semipro club which featured several ex-Sounders as coaches and players. FC Seattle alumni were included in the anniversary celebration.

The reunion was bittersweet, said Gillett, 73. Gone were Best and Jimmy Gabriel, the coaches who recruited him from Britain, as well as some of his closest teammates.

“It was a bit sad because there are a lot of memories of them,” Gillett said. “Jimmy Gabriel, John Best, Roy Sinclair, Adrian (Webster). Some of the guys at the beginning have begun to drop away now.

“But that first season was frigging fantastic. Those are memories that I’ll carry for a long, long time. The crowds, the welcome we got from the fans it was pretty awesome. Now it’s great to see how far they’ve come.”

It Was Personal Liotart saw the Sounders’ transformation through a time warp, jumping ahead nearly 50 years. There had been a handful of front office staff when he left in 1976, when he played in the Kingdome’s first sporting event, a friendly versus Pelé and the Cosmos. Given a tour of the Longacres offices and team spaces, he was astounded by the number of staff, player-friendly features and pristine grass training pitches. It’s a far cry from ’74 and much more businesslike, he said.

In simpler times, the first Sounders teams were renowned for their community engagement.

“We would see a bunch of kids kicking a ball and we’d get out of the car and teach them to kick it the right way,” recalled Liotart. “We did a lot (in the community), and we enjoyed it. We met a lot of people like that. We didn’t have to cook, because almost every night we could hang out at someone’s house. They were really good days.”

“My experience from the day I came to Seattle Sounders in ‘74 and from the way I was treated in 2017 (when he returned to receive the Golden Scarf alongside Webster) and of course the 50th celebrations have been among the joys of my life,” noted Butler, scorer of 10 goals that season. “The Sounders is where I made my name, and I will always be eternally grateful for them giving me a chance to prove what I could do.”

A Return to the Circle When the 1974 team was ushered to the midfield stage before the June 15 anniversary match, it was fittingly returning to a magical location where Camelot was breathed into creation 50 years before. There in the Memorial Stadium center circle, before all those impromptu clinics and flowery presentations, they forged a bond with the fans. That mutual acknowledgement, that effusive gesture, was like nothing before seen in Seattle professional sports.

Brian Schmetzer was a 12-year-old Lake City Hawk that night in 1974. Nowadays Schmetzer’s the face of the franchise. He urged his players to meet their predecessors, to further comprehend on whose shoulders they stand.

“Pepe and Dave and they all are such good guys,” said Schmetzer, who signed with the NASL club at 17. “I made sure that the players had multiple touch points with the old guard, the guys who first started it.”

As for the Old Guard, their connection to Seattle was reawakened.

Gillett was approached by numerous fans throughout the anniversary season. “Some said they’d been 5 or 6 years old when they saw their first game. They had seen the games at Memorial, and now they had sons or daughters or grandchildren coming to games.”

Months after returning to Texas, Liotart still found himself reliving the experience. “I’ll remember it the rest of my life,” he said. “Unbelievable, the way (Adrian Hanauer) and Brian and everyone treated us. Just first class.”

By activating the Circle of Legends, the Sounders’ Taylor Graham, himself a former player, says there will now be annual moment to reflect and honor individuals and teams, “a protagonist moment,” he termed it.

Back in England, Butler gushed about how the alumni were graciously hosted. “It’s absolutely amazing to be brought back, to be not only remembered but honored. They did us proud.”

It’s something I absolutely want to do. I know it puts (the Sounders) in a bit of a tough spot, but maybe felt like I earned that a little bit to ask. In the end, it was out of my control. They wanted me to stay here…I was so excited. I grew up watching the Olympics. To be able to say I was an Olympian the rest of my life, to tell my kid I was an Olympian would have been incredible.

The moment she got here, it just fit and the amount of dedication she's put to this club outside of everything else that she's done that's changed the sport globally, what she's done for this club - herself, Lu (Lauren Barnes), Jess and the foundations that they've built are so special that even with the new ownership group coming in, new staff coming in, new leadership coming in, that is what makes this club special. She just reminds everybody about that.

I love that I stayed with this club the whole time, and was able to finish my career here, I feel like I played a really fun and entertaining style. I tried to enjoy every moment. I tried to use whatever levers and platforms that I had to again, leave the game in a better place, and to show up and be really proud about being gay and being who I was. One of his gifts was we believed we could win any game, any time, against any opponent. There was always an angle that we were going to be the dominant team, this is how we’re going to win, and these are the advantages we’re going to have. And it cultivated this belief in the group that we could win, and that we were supposed to win.
