July 29, 1982

Tacoma Legend John Duggan Passes

Duggan was also the men's soccer coach at the University of Puget Sound from 1979-87. But the Irish immigrant was best known for his work with youth soccer. He didn't have much soccer or coaching experience when he started the Royals in 1967 yet that team, which included Stadium High graduates Jeff Durgan and Jeff Stock and Wilson's Mark Peterson, stayed together for 10 years and won numerous state and regional tournaments.

Sounders Draft 3 Huskies
December 14, 1982

Three members of Washington's NCAA tournament side are taken by the Sounders in the NASL draft. Co-Captain Tad Willoughby is chosen 11th overall. Mark Schuur, a youth teammate of Mark Peterson and Jeff Stock, goes 23rd overall and Steve Englebrick is 35th. Dan Pingrey of Seattle Pacific picked in the fourth round.

Even if they just go and train with the club and spend four or five months in the offseason in Europe, they’d really get involved with the game all the year round. As it is, they spend four or five months a year virtually doing nothing in the offseason.
Sounders assistant coach Harry Redknapp on sending Ian Bridge, Mark Peterson and Jeff Stock to train in England during the offseason
We don’t have to go off the deep end. But now we’ve lost 10 teams and we’ll probably lose a couple more. I think we’re capable of putting out five Americans, maybe six on each team…If we were still at two Americans on each side, maybe there wouldn’t be a Mark Peterson or a Jeff Stock…Sitting doesn’t help our development.
Jeff Stock, Tacoma-raised Sounders defender, on NASL requiring four North Americans on the field in 1983
We don't draw the biggest turnouts with the Storm, but we have a core of real soccer people. It's nice to get out of the carnival atmosphere of indoor soccer. I guess I'm a purist.
Jeff Stock, who leaves the Tacoma Stars to play with FC Seattle
You gotta hand it to them. They wouldn’t let us get hold of the game.
